SAT Transitions study notes
Before looking at transition words, name the relationship between the two ideas: contrast, cause, example, addition, or sequence. Then test a word. A polished-sounding transition is wrong if it tells the reader to expect the wrong relationship.
Worked example
Lab cultures grew faster in warmth. Warm field plots were also dry, and the organism spread more slowly there. ‘____, the field result does not disprove the lab finding.’
‘Nevertheless’ fits because the final sentence concedes an apparent conflict while explaining how both observations can be true. ‘Therefore’ would incorrectly treat the final sentence as a direct result.
